The AP reports, “Ford Motor says it is offering a payment protection plan to help reassure consumers who may be putting off a car purchase because of worries about losing their job.” The automaker “said Tuesday it will cover payments of up to $700 each month for up to a year on any new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle if consumers lose their jobs. Ford has reached a deal with the United Auto Workers union that will see wages frozen, year-end bonuses eliminated, and changes to retiree benefits both sides hope will help Ford survive. The pact may be just the first time the union agrees to concessions to help an automaker out of the crisis rocking the auto industry — General Motors and Chrysler are both in talks seeking similar agreements.

The Washington Post reports, “Ford announced plans yesterday to eliminate up to $10.4 billion of its debt by offering cash and stock to its creditors in hopes of positioning itself to better weather the weakest auto sales market in more than two decades.”

The least expensive muscle car in America will soon be the Ford Mustang. Ford has announced pricing on the 2010 edition of its legendary coupe – and the pony car will undercut both its major rivals. The base model Mustang, powered by a V6 engine, will cost jut $20,995.
Kicking Tires reports, “The base V-6 Challenger costs $1,225 more than the base Mustang, while the Camaro costs $1,250 more.”
Ford’s 90-degree, overhead-cam Modular V8 has covered a wide spectrum since it was introduced in 1991–powering luxury cars, SUVs, pickups and high-performance sports cars.
A large number of those engines have come from a Ford plant in Romeo, Mich., which has now built its 10-millionth engine–a 4.6-liter V8 that is headed for a 2010 Mustang GT.
