Hummer H2 Production Suspended

Gas prices may have dropped below $2 a gallon, and Americans may have resumed buying trucks and SUVs, but it hasn’t been enough to save the Hummer. AM General, the company that produces the giant Hummer H2 for General Motors, has suspended production of the big SUV and temporarily laid off the workforce that built it.
Autoblog reports, “This round of cuts can be attributed to slow sales of large, fuel-thirsty SUVs in general and the aging H2 in particular.”
It doesn’t help that H2 drivers are, according to a recent survey, more likely to get traffic tickets than drivers of any other vehicle.
Autoblog continues, “AM General spokesperson Craig MacNab was quoted as saying, ‘Nobody knows what’s going to happen with the H2 plant.’ In fact, nobody at either company is talking about when these employees may be called back or when H2 production will resume, leading some of us to wonder if it will pick back up at all.”
Asked about “rumors that the assembly line has been permanently dismantled,” MacNab told Fox News, “The plant is intact and ready to restart production when and if they get the word from GM.” He added, “we will produce more when we get more dealer orders.”
Those orders may not come any time soon. Hummer was the slowest-selling major auto brand at the end of 2008. Fox reports that in December, just 374 Hummers sold nationwide.
Because of the dearth of buyers, it is possible to negotiate a fantastic deal on a Hummer today. Research the best car deals with U.S. News’ car rankings and reviews.
